The Cornish Traction Preservation Club
Preserving Cornwall’s Steam Heritage Through Community and Celebration
We are a passionate community of volunteers, historians, and enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the legacy of steam traction engines and vintage machinery. Since our founding in 1960, our non-profit organisation has been at the heart of celebrating Cornwall’s rich industrial past. Through hands-on restoration projects, public displays, and educational outreach, we bring together individuals who share a love for the sights, sounds, and craftsmanship of historic engines.
One of our proudest achievements is the annual Tredinnick Rally – a cherished event that draws visitors from across the region. This vibrant gathering showcases an extraordinary array of steam-powered machines, vintage vehicles, and mechanical curiosities. Beyond offering a nostalgic journey into the golden age of engineering, the rally serves a greater purpose: raising essential funds for local charities and community initiatives. It’s a lively celebration of heritage, innovation, and the spirit of steam.

A Cornish History of Steam
Cornwall’s industrial heritage is firmly anchored in its pioneering contributions to mining and engineering, especially throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, the region emerged as a world leader in the extraction of tin and copper, fueling global demand and innovation. Central to this success was the development and use of steam engines – particularly the iconic beam engines – which revolutionised the industry. These powerful machines were essential for draining vast quantities of water from deep mine shafts, transporting heavy materials to the surface, and driving the crushing equipment used to process ore.
